Something happened, and your body hasn’t caught up to the fact that it’s over. Or someone is gone, and the world reorganized itself around their absence without asking you first. You’ve been carrying it a while now, and saying it out loud hasn’t made it any lighter.

Talk alone doesn’t always reach where trauma and grief actually sit, and there are ways of working that don’t depend on you narrating it well.

Jax Sullivan is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate at Allora Rise Counseling and Therapy, seeing adults 18 and up at the practice’s Cargo District office in Wilmington and by telehealth throughout North Carolina. Her clients typically arrive with complex or chronic symptoms of trauma, or in acute grief. They describe anxiety, depression, feeling dysregulated, and being unable to process pain no matter how much they talk about it.

She works most often with three things.

Trauma and attachment concerns

Your body hasn’t caught up to the fact that it’s over, the relationship patterns continue to happen, and small things still set it off. Jax works holistically to settle the nervous system, heal shame, process what happened, reduce triggers, and build a sense of safety and relational security.

Grief and traumatic loss

Someone is gone and the world rearranged itself around their absence without asking you. She works alongside you through the mourning, the painful emotions, the memories that are hard to sit with, and the slow work of processing your connection with the person(s) you lost.

Faith integration

You’re trying to reconcile what happened to you with what you believe about God. As a Christian herself, Jax makes room for Biblical lament, holds truth and grace together, and leaves the pace of it entirely yours.

Beyond those three, Jax also works with anxiety and panic, depression, childhood and sexual trauma, medical and birth trauma, pregnancy and infant loss, religious and spiritual trauma, perfectionism, burnout, self-esteem, and life transitions.

Clients describe Jax as a mixture of warm and gentle while also being direct.

She helps people build insight rather than avoid the painful thing, and she makes therapy feel more doable by building the safety first.

Jax is trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT), somatic and nervous system approaches including Somatic Experiencing and Polyvagal Theory, Internal Family Systems (IFS), family systems, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and narrative therapy. She reaches for EMDR when a client is stuck in triggering memories, intense anxiety, or negative beliefs about themselves. She uses somatic work with people who can’t feel safe or relaxed in their own bodies, whether that shows up as being constantly on alert or as feeling shut down and numb. She uses EFIT for clients caught in the same relational or personal cycle, and IFS to explore the protective and vulnerable parts underneath.

Outside the office, Jax enjoys spending time with her husband, family, and friends, playing volleyball, taking dips in the ocean, exercising, and reading.

Your first session

Jax welcomes you into the space by confirming what confidentiality means and telling you about herself and how she works. Then, she engages with gentle, warm questions about your life, your experiences, and what you want out of this. The goal for the first hour is a space that already feels safe and collaborative, and for you to leave more hopeful about therapy than when you walked in.

Whether Jax is your fit

Jax works one-to-one with adults 18 and up, and her practice is built around trauma, grief, and attachment. Complex or chronic trauma symptoms, acute grief, and the attachment patterns underneath both.

If that is what brought you here, a free fifteen-minute consultation with Jax is the fastest way to know. If you’re carrying something else, email info@allorarise.com or call or text 910-408-2302, and we’ll point you to the therapist here who works with it.
